“Then Judas, the one who would betray Him, said, ‘Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?’
Jesus answered, ‘You have said so.’”
— Matthew 26:25 (NIV)
I’ve read this verse countless times.
Each time, I hear the sting in Jesus’ voice.
Not anger.
Not sarcasm.
But sorrow.
A man He had walked with.
Shared meals with.
Washed the feet of.
Looked Him in the eye and asked the question He already knew the answer to:
“Is it me, Rabbi?”
And Jesus, full of grief and grace replies:
“You have said so.”
Translation?
“You said it… but now show me with your actions.”
It’s easy to judge Judas.
To roll our eyes like Jesus did in that powerful scene from The Chosen or that dramatic skit you might’ve seen on Instagram or YouTube:
“Is it me, Jesus?”
“Is it me, Jesus?”
But then I look in the mirror.
And I wonder if Jesus is still answering that way.
To me.
To you.
You say you love Me…
But do you forgive like I said?
You say I’m Lord…
But do I lead your decisions?
You say you trust Me…
But why are you still holding that backup plan?
You have said so… but have you done so?
Judas wasn’t the only one at the table.
We all sit there with professions on our lips and betrayals in our hearts.
He called Jesus Rabbi (teacher)…
But not Lord.
And that’s where it begins.
When we follow His teaching but not His heart.
When we quote His words but don’t submit to them.
This is not about perfection.
It’s about proximity.
It’s about posture.
It’s about letting our lives echo our lips.
Because Jesus still hears what we say.
But He’s also watching how we live.
Dear Yahweh’s Delight,
Don’t just say the right things.
Live the right things.
Let “You have said so” be a confirmation of devotion,
not a contradiction of your actions.
Because He’s still the same Jesus
Sitting at the table.
Looking you in the eye.
Calling you by name.
Inviting you to follow- not just with words, but with your life.
